How do I broadcast a message?

How do I broadcast a message that will appear on all the terminals of all people logged in to a particular machine?

I'm looking for something like the message you get when you do a 'reboot' or a 'shutdown'.

Thanks in advance!

I tried the wall command and it worked...almost. It did send the messege to all terminals currently connected, but I could not get it to actually inform the user currently logged into my Linux box. Is there something else that I need to do in order to fix this? Or is it just impossible to send it to the X-Window system?
