how do i bring up a running process?

ok, here's my problem. i logged into my server via putty, ran a command, which started doing it's thing in the terminal. putty then timed out, but my process is still running. how do i bring the process back to the terminal? it is not listed a job so i cannot bring it to the foreground. basically, i started bittorrent-curses and the download started, my putty terminal timed out and the download is still going but i want to bring the process back up to the terminal. any ideas? can this be done without having screened it or running it in the background initially?

Screen would be the answer in future - I can't help with the current problem.
Let it finish, or kill it and then restart it via screen ???.
