how do bootable CDs work

Hello,

I just wanted to make a linux bootable CD and wanted to know how it
works. I searched the web, found some docs but still could not get it
properly.

Any pointers would be great but user experiences would be more fun to
read. what really happens when the computer is booted using the CD,
what programs/softwares are called(or executed). i want to know the
inner workings.

any help would be great.

thank you,
regards,
vijay.
