How can i write driectly to frame buffer

Hi ,
I have installed Fedora Core4. I want to wirte an application which directly writes in to the frame buffer.I have seen some sample examples on the net they are using /dev/fb0 to write. When checked in my /dev directory there is no /dev/fb0.
Can I use X11 to directly write in to the framebuffer.I want to write an application to make portion of the screen to be displayed as window.

If you don't have /dev/fbN (where N is a number: N=0,1,2,...) then it would seem to me that you haven't enabled framebuffer in your kernel? If we're talking about the same thing here..
