How can I ONLY use devfs, and not get the hda. hdb, pty, etc nonsense?

I was using ROCK Linux and they ONLY used devfs. The /dev folder was really clean and organized, and I really liked it. But, I'm back to Slackware, and I was wondering if there was a way to only use devfs, so when I type "ls /dev" it doesn't spam my screen like a maniac.

Not a big deal, but, I'd like to know.

Ha ha! Someone beat me to it!
I recompiled my kernel the other day, and silly me I didn't put the devfs thing in my lilo.conf's append for that kernel. Now when I boot either kernel (both now using devfs) I get shed-loads of stuff under /dev. Is there anyway to get rid of the ones that I don't need?

Lack of response..

Come on people! My Linux box is shaping up so so nicely. Fixing /dev would be a good step for me. Any help!?

Are you sure the devfsd daemon is running. If you enable the option CONFIG_DEVFS_MOUNT in the kernel then you don't have to add the line to your lilo.conf.

But you can read more about how the devfs should be setup and how it works in the following file:

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/filesystems/devfs/README
