How can I get out of gui log in? (X not co-op'n)

I'm running Turbo Linux FUJI on a T23 Thinkpad.

The login screen comes up with X no problems but when I try to log in to KDE as root or another user the screen ends up blank.

Is there a way to get the system to just boot to init 3?

(The login screen allows you to drop to console login but the screen goes blank there too.)

Just press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE

That will kick you out of X. Not sure how to directly go to init3 without getting inside KDE first.

Maybe try editing your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and put in a generic VESA graphics card and some low resolution.
