hide the characters?

Hi there..... i need some help with a little script file
How i can hide the characters that the user is typing...Something like the passwd command.. users writes his password , but none of the characters are visible in the screen....
I think tha command is the stty (i cant find the parameter)
Something else now.. How can i read a variable without a line feed?
I want to write a message and the cursor to stay at the right of the text to read the new value...
If i use the read command it changes automatically the line..
What i must do?
