hibernate pc from command line


Hi do u know how can we hibernate our pc from command line? I use ubuntu and in the degault gnome it has a selection for system hibernation but i dont use it so iwant to know how i can hibernate my pc from a terminal...

Maybe one of these commands is what you have in mind. I saw some more options to the command in google.

xset dpms force standby
xset dpms force suspend
xset dpms force off

I have found in the official ubuntu packages the hibernate script but still i cant hibernate my pc

alaios@taksideytis:/usr/src/hello-2.1.0/src$ sudo hibernate
Your kernel does not have any recent Software Suspend 2 support compiled in.
Please follow the HOWTO linked from http://softwaresuspend.berlios.de/ for
instructions on how to compile Software Suspend into your kernel.
hibernate: Aborting.
