Friends of friends told me about a young man, a friend at university, who has MS I believe. He uses the computer but is now reduced to just using the mouse - he can't use the keyboard.

They told me that he really wants to be able to use two mice - was it possible? Well, I replied that I reckoned it would be possible with Linux - most things are possible with Linux! They were very happy, because their friend is such a great guy and, like most handicapped people, the restrictions he's faced with, he makes up for by putting more intensity into the things he can do.

When I looked into the matter, I wished I had said nothing. I realised the problem was a complex one. It is not a simple matter of getting X to recognise two pointers - but the ability to have independent cursors on the screen, one for each mouse and the system being able to respond to each of them.

I see that I am completely out of my depth here, hence I am asking - begging - any of you who have the special knowledge and expertise required, whether you would be willing to pick up the ball, and see if there is anything that can be done to help handicapped people by giving them the ability to use BOTH of their hands when using the computer.

I don't have any special knowledge and expertise so I can only offer MPX, the Multi-Pointer X Server. If that doesn't fit the bill then at least the page lists some alternatives.
