Help with untaring files

Hello everyone,

I just installed redhat 7.2 on my system, and i am having a problem with untaring files.

for instance i try to untar a file:

Quote:
tar -xvf file.tar.gz
and it comes up with this error:

Quote:
tar:this does not look like a tar archive
tar:skipping to next header
tar:151garbarge bytes ignored at the end of archive
tar:error exit delayed from previous errors
plus, when i goto my home directoy and double click on a program, file.tar.gz i get :

Quote:
nautilus has not installed a viewer capable of displaying "file.tar.gz"
[edit]plus i can't view whats inside rpm files, from my home directory, i'm guessing its the same problem which is causing the other problem.[/edit]

Does anyody know how to fix this or does anybody know a program to allow me to untar them etc.

Thankyou.

For files ending with gzip, try tar xzvf ...

For files ending with bz2, try tar xjvf ...

file.tar.gz files are not only tar'ed, but "zipped" as well. You can do the above, with -xzvf, or, you can use gunzip...

>$ gunzip file.tar.gz
>$ tar -xvf file.tar
