Help with setup/partition


ok i formated my drive and i partitioned it with fdisk, i have a 40 gig and a 17 gig.... the 40 gig is the primary which i put Xp on, and i want to install RH8 on the 17 gig drive. When i try to install RH8 it doesnt see the 17 gig, the 17 gig is an EXT partion, what am i doing wrong?

im trying to do this, have a dual boot with RH8 and XP with only one hard drive, do i want to format the new partion? but that would make it a fat 32 which wont allow linux on. In windows i can see the partion but cant acsses it obviosuly b/c its not formated

in fdisk you should make the 17G partition type linux (83), no need to format, and RH should be able to catch it...

ok when i ran fdisk i used the windows boot cd, im not familiar with the linux version of it... and do you do it in the install process where it says advanced?

I don't know about the windows version of fdisk. I think you really should use a linux version. But I suppose you can do all that from the RedHat install cd. And I would say always go for the advanced or expert set-up, then you have a little more control over what happens, and you can still accept the defaults it suggests. Also don't forget to install the development stuff, even if you're no programmer, you will need it at some point (for example to install drivers that are not on the install cd).

You can let the installer auto partition and format the 17g hard drive for you. And yes you do it during the install process.

The Red Hat Installation Program will give you the option to eliminate the entire drive, eliminate only the Linux partitions or just use the empty space. The last option is what Red Hat prefers to encounter, but since you've already put a partition there, select the option to use the Linux partition and let Red Hat arrange it the way it wants.

i figured out my problem, it was mbr one i got rid of it, problems solved
