i need some help understanding how to unzip and install these types of files. i'm trying to install some tcl files into a certain directory's folder. how would i do that? any help would be great! thank you in advance!
please read the sticky thread at the top of the linux - general forum, or absolutely any newbies guide you could. if you have specific problems pelase feel free to ask, but what you'e asking is a very general question which is answered in many hundreds of threads on this site. for details on using ar itself, please check the tar manpage.
To "unzip" a tar.gz package, type
tar xzf foo.tar.gz
the x means, that you want tar to copy out the contens
the z means, that you want tar to unpack the archive
the f means, that it shall take the next argument as the tar file.
then cd to the new directory, and try:
./configure --prefix=/home/certain-user/some/folder
it prints out a long list of things that it checks for. if no errors are found, type:
make
it prints even more stuf to the screen. you can ignore most of it, including warnings, as long as it compiles
make install
copies the new programs to the installation directoryes. if you wish, you may now remove the directorys you are standing in.
this is the normal procedure, if it fail, try a file called readme README or Readme.
Have a look at man tar, if you ever have a problem with a comand try taking a look at its man page i.e (for ls you would type man ls) also try info (info ls)
