first, check for a readme. this is the most helpful
I was stuck in the same situation since I've only been a linux user for 3 weeks. if you have a blah.c file, use this by typing gcc blah.c
this compiles the c program. you probably want to use " gcc -o blah blah.c" that way you get a program named blah but you still have the old blah.c file if you mess up. back up the program/file you are patching first using cp infile outfile just in case. then move the newly compiled patch to replace the old program/file. If there are any man pages, put them in your regular man dir. there shouldn't be that much to do.
