Help me update my linux os

Newbie here.... Because I am tired of having my hands tied with windows os, and because I'm a junior Computer Science major, I have started using Linux. The only thing that I can say about it is why I never decided to start using it earlier. I absolutely love it!! But I have run into a snag that I haven't been able to solve myself. I started using urpmi and rpmdrake to keep my system up to date and to also pull down new software. I have been using Easy Urpmi's website to find mirrors to accomplish this. Everything works great except the "contrib" mirrors. I have tried up to 6 different mirrors and I always get the same error. The error I get is as follows:

[root@localhost root]# urpmi --auto-select
medium "primarycontrib" uses an invalid list file:
mirror is probably not up-to-date, trying to use alternate method
Everything already installed
[root@localhost root]#

Does anyone know what this error is trying to tell me, and how I can fix it? URPMI is kind of useless for pulling down new apps if I can't resolve all the dependencies, some of which are on the contrib mirrors.

Thanks
Mike

There are limits to what urpmi can do. When you get into situations too complex for it to figure out then switch to using command line rpm. Download the packages that you want with gftp or your web browser and after you collect everything then do your installs, removals, and upgrades with command line rpm. See:
man rpm

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

I left the one in Mandrake open as its more suitable there.
