Are there any errors hidden in the console output after you run mplayer? also, try using -vo xv

hmm...well you said xmms is working fine? open xmms, go to preferences, on the first tab Audio I/O Plugins, you'll see Output plugins with a list to choose from. Try them all, noting which ones play and which ones dont. you'll have to restart xmms after you change it.
