Help compiling kernel with scsi options...

heres the deal. I have an on board raid controler, and i had to dl the drivers for it so that linux could install. I put them on a disk, and when linux asked for the scsi drivers i put in the disk and hit F2...you know the drill. So im in linux right now and all is well. However when i dl'ed the new kernel (using up2date) i figured the generic kernel they gave me wouldnt work. So i recompiled a new one using the directions on redhat's site.

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...om-kernel.html

How ever upon booting with the new kernel, it gives me a kernel panic and an error about sda3 i beleive. (sd3 is the partition that / is on) Does anyone have any experience with compiling kernels with scsi drivers that arent in the kernel? Im not sure what to do and i would REALLY like to update my kernel ;) thanks in advance. BTW, im using redhat 7.3 :)
