HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

Whatever options I try it seems to be impossible to get the 2.4.19 kernel to accept DMA-setting using hdparm. When using the original kernel - on this computer a kernel built by RedHat (the official RH 8.0 kernel, 2.4.18-17) it works flawlessly ... on this one I customized though it doesn't?!?

The error I always get:
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

The options I've used to built the kernel itself are (contents of .config):

BTW, I searched the forum and found a thread regarding about the same issue - but this wasn't of any help to me ... what am I missing?

Something strange also ... on the RedHat kernel I had (in /var/log/messages):
Quote:
Oct 25 15:09:51 ns kernel: PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xf1e90, last bus=2
Oct 25 15:09:51 ns kernel: PCI: Using configuration type 1
Oct 25 15:09:51 ns kernel: PCI: Probing PCI hardware
Oct 25 15:09:51 ns kernel: Transparent bridge - Intel Corp. 82801BA/CA/DB PCI Bridge
Oct 25 15:09:51 ns kernel: PCI: Using IRQ router PIIX [8086/24c0] at 00:1f.0
And with this customized kernel I got:
Quote:

Okay this IS a kernel related problem. It has been fixed in 2.4.20-pre6 ... 2.4.19 (stable) includes a DMA problem for at least Asus P4B533 board!

The problem itself is NOT grsecurity related if somebody thinks that ... I double-checked that and I've compiled 2.4.20-pre11 with the SAME settings as 2.4.19 and it works!

In fact, the 2.4.20-pre11 patch includes (from the patch-2.4.20.log):
Quote:
Summary of changes from v2.4.20-pre5 to v2.4.20-pre6
============================================
...
o [TIGON3]: Low power, wake-on-lan, and DMA test fixes
...
Summary of changes from v2.4.20-pre4 to v2.4.20-pre5
============================================
...
o set DMA mask in i2o
Hope this helps somebody to safe time
