Having trouble with U-tube
 

I just got introduced to Linux yesterday, and cant seem to figure out how to make u-tube work with the Ubutu. Any suggestions? BTW, please use laymans terms cause I'm also somewhat computer illiterate :-) Thanks..

Generally speaking all you have to do is install adobe flash. I take it you are using firefox? Well, firefox SHOULD drop down a bar asking you to install missing plugins. I recommend clicking on that. Another way to get it to work is by downloading the plugin via apt-get (Or whatever ubuntu uses for its package updating program). And a third option is to download the package from: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...Platform=Linux
I recommend the tar.gz version. From there you download it, open a terminal window type 'cd Desktop' , type 'tar -xvf filename.tar.gz' (Note, filename is the name of the file... DONT type filename literally), type 'cd flash*' , then type 'ls' to give you a directory listing. From there I believe all you have to type is './flash-installer' .. Or maybe its ./flash-installer.sh ... I cant remember. From there all you have to do is follow instructions. It will have you close your running firefox window, and install adobe flash. From there you should be set. Open firefox and go to youtube.

Load up the Synaptic package manager (System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager) , search for a package called flashplugin-nonfree and install it. Synaptic is usually the easiest way to get software installed on Ubuntu - there is loads of software available in the Ubuntu package repositories.

You may want to head over to http://ubuntuforums.org/ where unlike here, everyone uses Ubuntu.

Or post on both since we have a very knowledgeable user base here with many people extremely well versed in Debian and the derivative distros. UbuntuForums will give you lots of how tos.

That is the way i would install the package... I am not familiar with Ubuntu. I ran it for all of a week. And back to Slack I go :)

Well, thanks a lot guys for the info, but now my Brother tells me that it's called "Kubuntu" instead of Ubutu, and were still trying to figure out this thing. Is there any difference between the two as far as youtube is concerned? Thanks again...

Kubuntu is the same as Ubuntu except that it uses the KDE desktop environment where as Ubuntu uses Gnome. Actually I guess to look at they're very different but they use the same package repositories under the hood and differ only in the default desktop environment.

The method I described for Ubuntu is the same in principle as for Kubuntu expect Kubuntu uses a different package manager called Adept. Have a look in the System section of the K Menu for Adept Manager. (The K Menu is the thing in the bottom left of the screen where the Start menu would be on Windows.) You may also find a program marked 'Add/Remove programs' or possibly 'Add/Remove packages' (I'm not at my Kubuntu box right now.) Which is like a simplistic version of Adept manager which allows you to search by package type.

Kubuntu does not install Firefox by default but you can install it via Adept Manager at the same time you install Flash. If you select the Firefox package you'll get a Firefox 3 beta which will get automatically updated to the release version. If you want Firefox 2 there's a package there for that too.
