Exclamation Having GUI problems with FC3

Recently I installed Fedora Core 3 on an old Compaq Presario 5000(673 Mhz, 256 MBs memory, i810e 4MB video memory, 20 GB HD) and use a Keyboard Video Monitor switch. I went through the instillation process with no problems. Then when I went into the GUI I found that when i opened a program the box would not fully come into exsistance, and I would have to use an icon and drag it around the window until all of the window appeared. Even when I pulled down a list when i pushed on say the games button I would need to move it to the left and move my mouse down until the full list was revealed. I have tried lowering resolution, and even made the colors down to 256. I have come to wits end with this problem and must request your assistance for this problem, is my old computer too old and i should replace it with a new souped up computer? Or is it my KVM switch? Or is it even possible to solve this problem with no purchase? Any help is greatly appriciated.

Yes and no. Fedora Core 3 would be a bad distribution to run on your hardware. You really want to look into more light-weight distributions. Desktop environments like KDE and, usually to a lesser extent, GNOME, will run very slowly on machines like yours. A first test therefore might be to replace the window manager/desktop environment (which will take less time, but require more user attention than simply installing a new distro) with something like IceWM or WindowMaker. Although XFCE is a light-weight desktop environments, I would hesitate to recommend it for your system.

You haven't told us what CPU is in your computer? Pentium/Pentium Pro?

Regards,

Samsara
