I used to use Debian, and its a very nice distro. apt-get is not the only reason to use Debian. Others are things like debconf, kpkg, and the incredibly high package quality.

Yes most common stuff are in disc one but disc 7 is not really obscure because as far as i remember it contains the kernel-source.

In case you have a good internet connection, only disc 1 is necessary but if you don't have, burn all the 8 cds.

I got all 7 cds, why not? I have the bandwidth. As for a debian update site, would ftp://ftp.deban.org/debian work? Simple enough.
