Hardware autodetect

Back to Linux after a long time...
Suddenly I found some linux supports Hardware autodetect support. It sounds great!!

I have an external 250 GB Lacie USB 2.0 HDD. It would be great if It works like plug-n-play into USB and automatically mount my external HDD or my flash drive.

Is this feature built-in in Slackware 10.2? if not then which distribution has this feature built-in?

Is there any package for that? Or Kernel do that? Or how will I make this feature work in Slackware 10.2?

Thanks in advance.

Keyword here is autofs. Setup autofs so it automatically mounts whenever you plug the drive in and cd into the directory. And yes, it's usually packaged with Slackware and about every other distro.
