Hard links and soft links - the esoteric details

I've been using softlinks as long as I've been using Lx, and early in the game I established a strict rule ONLY to use soft rather than hard links. The caveat that prompted this was the (long forgotten reference) that hard links to directories could break the filesystem.

I'm now wanting to create a directory branch in which references to music MP3's in subdirectories are available from higher-level index directories. This seems like a valid use of hard links from several index directories to individual files in storage directories.

I'd therefore like to clarify my hazy understanding of the difference between hard and soft links.

This post is intended as a reference for those encountering similar requirements, and I'd much appreciate technical input from those with relevant practical experience.
