hard drive help

I need to check the quality of my hard drive. I have a 100gig Western digital that I bought 5 months ago for my linux server. I'm noticing my files are messing up now. For example mp3s being played are skipping in places they use to now, and vidoes I have are messing up. Do I have to defrag the drive? If there is such a thing. all help welcomed, thanks!

Linux file system doesn't suffer from fragmentation just because there is no such a thing as fragmentation in linux. I'd suspect your multimedia is malfunctioning, is there any other files that you suspect are corrupted. Run fsck on the drive to check if there are any inodes corrupted.
man fsck
will give a good overview of the command's flags.

checking the drive

After reading the man file it looks like it will check the file system. Will this check the drive its self, ie if sectors on the disk are bad?
