Thumbs up Hard disk freezes while installing GRUB

Hello,
I have a fc4 linux installed. Recently reinstalled WINDOWS. So i had to install the GRUB using FC4 disc 1 in rescue mode. When i gave the command, the hard disk light goes off for 10 seconds (seems as if it is going to sleep mode) and then returns to normal mode. But the computer will be hanged and grub will not be installed.

So I reinstalled FC4 thinking that fresh installation might work, but unfortunately after the completion of installation, i was surprised that the boot loader was not installed.

I again tried the rescue mode, but the same problem repeated.

Can anybody figure out what is the problem.

Thankx

Are you actually still using Fedora Core 4?
Without knowing which command you used, it would be difficult to assess the problem.
Also might help if you posted your drive/partition information.
Which bootloader option did you select when installing Grub Bootlader?

My drive partition is /dev/hda and linux is installed in /dev/hda10. it is the last partition.
I used grub-install /dev/hda to install the grub.

You can go to this site and find several options:

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/grub.html

If you are sure you Grub files are on hda10 then this should work from a grub prompt:

Quote:
root (hd0,9)
setup (hd0)
quit
To be certain, before running the commands from a grub prompt run? find /boot/grub/grub.conf
