Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have a fc4 linux installed. Recently reinstalled WINDOWS. So i had to install the GRUB using FC4 disc 1 in rescue mode. When i gave the command, the hard disk light goes off for 10 seconds (seems as if it is going to sleep mode) and then returns to normal mode. But the computer will be hanged and grub will not be installed.
So I reinstalled FC4 thinking that fresh installation might work, but unfortunately after the completion of installation, i was surprised that the boot loader was not installed.
I again tried the rescue mode, but the same problem repeated.
Are you actually still using Fedora Core 4?
Without knowing which command you used, it would be difficult to assess the problem.
Also might help if you posted your drive/partition information.
Which bootloader option did you select when installing Grub Bootlader?
