Hanging on a boot while checking a file system

Hi.

My system starts to hang on boot recently. It occurs while the "Checking file systems..." process. I noticed that if I don't wait the established seconds in the GRUB menu and press the "Enter" key right away the system will boot without any problems.

What is the reason of the bug? How can I fix it?

Debian 5.0.3;
GRUB 0.97.

Thanks.

a disk problem. There should be a notice to do it manually

use fsck -fv and say yes

There aren't any notifications, the system just hang. I don't think this is the HDD problem. I want to pay your attention that the system boot without any problems if I don't wait a couple of seconds in GRUB and push the "Enter" button right away. If so, the "Checking files systems..." stage goes on and returns the relevant info. After that the system starts and works OK and I don't feel that there're any problems or errors.

Ok, then check /boot/grub/menu.lst

look for the default line 0 is the first entry See what it's booting and what you are. They could be 2 different things
