Help,

I just installed Linux Anaconda for the first time, and all I get is a
text screen. During installation I chose gnome (and KDE) as my X-Windows environment. I've got a monitor (RealSync RealFlat 770F) that didn't show up in the monitor list so I choose a monitor (Panasonic TX1734-J) which had simular horizontal and vertical frequencies to mine. When I boot up the system I hear the monitor snapping to the Panasonic's video mode over and over again. If I hit any key then the system presents a text login screen to login to the system with.

Does someone know what I can do here to get this to work.

During installation I tested several different monitor types for different manufacturers 17 inch monitors, but I coudn't see anything just a blank screen with some text up in the upper left hand corner, and then the screen would come back to the installation screen after about 5 seconds.

In Windows-XP I selected a standard Plug and Play" monitor at 60HZ. I have a Matrox Graphics Millenium G200 AGP video card.


Anybody got any suggestions.

Log into text mode and run
XConfigurator (or Xconfigurator)
answer questions about your monitor, graphic card etc. If you have your monitor manual, enter the values there are in. If not, choose Generic SVGA. After making it running you might expariment with other settings.

I used Xconfigurator and it still does the samething. That is I see some wierd text that is zipping vertically across the screen and hear snapping monitor sound. I hit some control key combination to get a text screen and then login. I tried entering in my monitors exact parameters from the manual but still can't get the Gui to come up right?

Edit the monitor section of your X config file by hand and put in the HorizSync and VertRefresh values specified in your monitor manual, don't worry about changing the name.

Did you try typing 'startx'?

Can you try setting it as Generic VGA?

I am having similar startx problems...I can not get startx to work...I tried differ monitor/video settings with Xconfigurator and Xf86config, but still no luck.....I even did a update -u , but still nothing...can someone please help!!??? THANK YOU!

well, what errors do you get?? X always gives decent error messages when it fails

Fatal Error 104....

how can I see more details about the error?

Have a look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log

$startx &> xerror

now view the file xerror

How do I copy it and post it to you guys?..I am a newbie....ftp?

Thanks for all your help but I figured it out on my own.

I figured X-Windows wasn't starting because it couldn't recognize my mouse and not because of my video card or monitor type, and I was correct. yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

All that time I spent messing around with the video card and monitor in Xconfigurator was for notttttttttttttttttt!

Since it was getting a mouse error in my /var/log/Xfree86-0 log I decided to fix that. X-Windows has to have a mouse in order to startup and work, and when it couldn't find one then it wouldn't startup. But now everything starts up after fixing the mouse issue.

Thanks for the help guys..after looking at the log I realized that my mouse and keyboard were not configured right.
