Angry GUI Mandrake 8.1 Issue

I have had Mandrake 8.1 running for several months. I noticed one day that the windows were redrawing very slowly. I rebooted and that is the last that I have seen of my GUI since. When I boot in to text mode and run "startx" I get an error of "Fatal Server Error: Could not open default font 'Fixed'" and I also get "XIO: fatal IO erro 104(Connection reset by peer) on X server":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining." I am struggling here. I have no idea why this happened all of the sudden. The video card I am using in the Matrox G-550. My monitors are are (were) running at 1280X1024. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. I need to use my computer other than the command line!

I didn't do anything out of the norm. I just rebooted when the redraw became very slow. Nothing was installed and nothing was changed. I was just surfing the internet and checking my email

Have a look in /var/log/XFree96.0.log, the specific error message will be near the end of the file.

Sounds to me like your font server is no longer running. Have you checked it?
