GUI ? Desktop disappeared in Kali Linux

I have the latest kali linux live on 8gb USB stick
All was working fine when suddenly the desktop disappeared
I can still run from commands but i want the desktop back
It would be much quicker to just create the bootable USB disk again but I will then delete all my files (don't have many but some I dont wish to lose) I have no idea how to access them
Incidentally If I boot into live mode as opposed to persistence the desktop is still there

You can access the file on the Kali usb by booting another Linux system and inserting the usb drive and mounting the drive if it is not accessible under the /media directory. You can then copy them to your other Linux system. You don't give much information so we don't know what you have available.

When I fire up the bootable USB kali I get into the main grub menu where I have the various options - kali live, persistence, etc....if I boot into live I have the desktop but if I boot into persistence I just get to the auto login page....one big terminal. The cntrl+Alt+f7 does not bring up the desktop nor does startx. I have no idea what has happened to cause this & just wondered if there was a way to get it back....seems like creating a new bootable USB is going to be the answer
On that note is 8gb USB sufficient
