I installed a rpm package for guarddog on redhat 9 first i want to say there our two packages a source and a i386 why is that do you need both second of all i installed 1 and verified the install the instructions say that kde will then have a gui in the menu no such gui is there why it's driving me nuts even if i could bring it up from the command line i would be happy.
I think i installed the rpm for redhat 7 when i found the package for 9 it will not let me install i tried to remove the older package and nothing.

why our installs and uninstalls and upgrades so complex in linux.

well if anyone can help me in any way i would be happy.

thanks in advanced.

//moderator.note: moving to Linux - General as this isn't a security question but general info, package management.

The .src.rpm contains the source files to rebuild the package on your box ("rpm --rebuild <package>"), the .i386.rpm can be installed directly, as it is a compiled ("binary") rpm for Intel architecture boxen, compiled w/o architecture/CPU specific tweaks.

why our installs and uninstalls and upgrades so complex in linux.

If you have trouble installing rpm's I suggest you run it with test parameters first: "rpm -ivh --test <package>" and post the output.
If that doesn't generate enough error messages, try adding a second v: "rpm -ivvh --test <package>" and post the output.

Installing rpm's isn't hard, but you have to get yourself aquainted with the basic info. Not like you need to read "Maximum RPM", but keeping your head cool and reading the manual could help.

HTH.
