.gtkrc default gtk theme

....Gnomecc does everything but change themes. (slack 8.1.)
in that section, it simply sits there. So rather than figure that out I want to edit the file that sets default theme.
.gtkrc seems to be what I want but it says " do not edit" and MAINLY is full of references to xfce, and I am wondering--if I delete this from my home dir, will I be able to get a clean one? Anyone had this happen--I saw acid kewpie had this issue, but there is no real solution, just that it got resolved.
Thanks
