grub with winxp and hpt370 ide controller

hi, i need some help getting grub to run with dualboot on my system.
i have a kt7a-raid with onboard hpt370 ide raid controller. i just use the hpt as ide controller without the raid function though. i'm running suse 9.1 and winxp-sp1
my ide setup is following:

on the standard ide controller:
hda: maxtor 80gig drive with /boot on hda2 / on hda6
hdb: nothing
hdc: dvdrom
hdd: dvdwriter
on the hpt370:
hde: samsung 160gig drive with winxp on hde1
hdf: nothing
hdg: maxtor 80gig drive raw unformatted
hdh: nothing

well i started off with just the disks on hda and hde and installed grub on the mbr of hde as from hda it would boot linux fine but no windows and it worked fine with linux and win booting.
then i shut it down and connected the raw drive to hdg.
i checked if the boot device for the hpt370 was still set to hde and tried to boot.
but grub just states "GRUB " followed by a flashing cursor and doesnt do anything more.

i restored the mbr of hde with fixmbr and installed grub on hda mbr. now i can at least boot linux and win but i have to change boot device in bios everytime i want to change os but i'd prefer to get grub running if anyone can tell me what i did wrong...

Not easy lets have a go

have a look at my rough tutorial.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=198155

2) lets make up a maxtor /boot/grub/menu.lst file and without yet saving it (overwrite) you post whats different?

title maxtor hda
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 ro (etc)

title samsung
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

3) if you have nothing on hdg grub no help. Trick it similar to my post on installing w98 to a second drive (bios deselect drives 1 and 2) etc as per
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=177690

b4 playing with your bios make sure you know how to make changes etc. Actually you can't do too much damage with the bios technique to install windows to your third drive as long as you know how to reset your drives 1 and 2 back into bios boot up (for the Grub on hda to work)

4) Notice the grub file will be on hda that if we agree is the one you alter. If you do install linux to the third drive any /boot folder there is more like a chainload for linux ok?
