Grub Rescue - failure to boot Linux in dual drive system

Grub Rescue

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have Ubuntu 10.04 on one hard drive and Win XP on another hard drive. Got 35 viruses a couple days ago and it fried the Win XP hard drive. Had to reformat it then start reinstalling from the backup and CD's.

Now, can't boot (via Grub or bios) to the Ubuntu drive. The data is still there but just can't boot to it. If I try a boot to the hard drive via the bios or partition commander recovery disk, I get a prompt, "Grub rescue >" I don't know what this Grub Rescue is nor do I know any commands for it.

I just want to get my Grub dual boot back so I can use Linux again.

Any ideas?

Your boot loader, grub, gets overwritten by windows anytime you reinstall windows (ain't MS fun?!)

This link should help:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

Specifically the following two sections:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...ing%20GRUB%202

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Rescue%20Mode

Might want to bookmark and read them thoroughly until you understand grub well enough, because if you're used to reinstalling windows on a regular basis, you're going to need them quite often.

Which, IMHO, is all the more reason to kick MS Windows to the curb. :)

This has been a life saver for me more than once, http://www.ubuntu-inside.me/2009/06/...r-windows.html, but you would do well to read up on the links scott_R posted before.

Ubuntu uses GRUB2 AFAIK. Look here for a simple explanation and recovery recipe for GRUB-legacy:

Thank you all for the responses. I am sending this via Firefox on my Ubuntu Lucid system. It worked. Wow.
