grub prompt blues

this has been bugging me for the past few weeks. i spend hours downloading a particular distro and after burning the iso to a disc, when i try to boot from the cd all i get is a grub prompt and nothing else. this has happened wih simply mepis, freespire and pclinuxos (big daddy). i have tried reading up in all the relevant forums but come away all confused. is there a way that i can once and for all get the damn things working?
i have ubuntu dapper as my main os. this problem does not seem to affect ubuntu at all.

Configure the boot order in your BIOS, normally by holding delete or some other key just after you turn on the computer.
