GRUB error WinXP hda, Linux hdc

Hi!

I know, there are so many posts about grub, that one is not able to read all, but I tried without success...

I have the following problem:
Windows XP on primary master (this is probaby my biggest problem)
RedHat 9 on the secondary master
Grub installed on hdc MBR
In bios set up SM as boot device

Can't boot to windows

My grub.conf looks like this:

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdc2
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hdc
default=1
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-8)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdd=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.4.20-8.img
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1

My device.map looks like this:

# this device map was generated by anaconda
(fd0) /dev/fd0
(hd1) /dev/hda
(hd0) /dev/hdc

I tried map, makeactive...

What do I wrong?

Thanx for your help guys!

Welcome to LQ, Oleg!!

Windows has to imagine it is booting from the master hard drive. So let grub map the second hard-drive is the first and vice-versa.

title WinXP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)

chainloader +1

What error are you getting while booting XP?

I dont know how the BIOS achieves the 'secondary master is *the* master effect', but somehow it is confusing the hardware ( in terms of jumper settings on the either or both drives themseves - have you checked? Are both set to master/bus-select? ) or the bootloader software or both. If I were you, I would set the jumpers on both drives to bus-select, and swap your primary and secondary drives and let BIOS treat the drives normally. Is there a reason you can't do that?

I tried this with
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
again and it worked. I must have done something wrong before...
Thanx again, I can boot to my new os and my old pseudo os too!

Actually I have an Intel D845PEBT2 board. The jumpers are all set to cable select. The board does not make any special. you can only select any hard drive to boot from. I think any mb is able to handle this.

Go ahead to the other problems like Tv-card, AD1840 sound chip, long delays because of the integrated serial ata controller, new kernel...

Thanx again!
