I have my partitions set up like so:
hda:
hda1: Windows XP
hdb:
hdb1: NTFS
hdb2: Linux
hdb3: Swap
When I installed Ubuntu on hdb2, it installed Grub, and Grub will not boot. It says GRUB error 5.
I've had a similar problem with LILO on Slack with the same partition setup before, but I don't remember how I fixed it
Thanks
This error is returned when a read is attempted at a linear block address beyond the end of the BIOS translated area. This generally happens if your disk is larger than the BIOS can handle (512MB for (E)IDE disks on older machines or larger than 8GB in general).
Post your menu.lst and maybe someone can help you. Or browse through Just Booting Tips and you may be able to salvage it yourself (the guy who wrote this boots 100+ OS's with grub...)
Not sure about that booting tips thing. Should I note that the second drive is 200gb and the first is 60gb?
I'm thinking maybe I just need to repair the XP bootloader, copy my stuff off and then reinstall. I could reorganize the partitions more effectively anyway.
I can't post the menu.lst, cause it's upstairs and the ubuntu doesn't have internet access yet.
You should be able to fix this. Do you have a Live CD like Knoppix? If so, I would try Task G on the just booting tips. It should help you find the kernel image name and initrd to get it to boot directly.
Okay, now I have a problem. I launched my XP cd, did the fixboot, fixmbr thing, and now XP will not pick up my second harddrive. HELP!
Also, is it worth noting that GRUB has been installed on the second hdd too? How can I remove that?
