group permissions

I work on a server at work where even though web files are set to 755, all memebers in group www have read+write+execute access to the files. I don't get how this works. Also, when I look at the files, some of them show that the owner is me, but the rest have a number which I assume is the user ID. The group is always www.

This is a solaris server I am working on, but I need to recreate this on a linux server, and I'm not sure how. It seems like web files are supposed to be set to 755. Is this true, or is it ok to make them 775?

Thanks,

Moses

It's weird though, because on this server at work I was looking at the web files and they look like this:

-rw-r--r--

But they are definitely world browsable. Can anyone explain that?
