how would i search a file, for example a log file, for more than one string or pattern.

for example i wouldnt to find all instances of the word 'the' and 'suck' in a file.

One way would be to pipe it to another grep command....
cat logfile | grep -e " the" | grep -e "suck"

better use word anchors!

egrep "(\<the\>|\<suck\>)" filename
