Question latex problem

I ma new to latex and having some problem with the graphics package of latex.

\usepackage{graphics} has been put in preamble as asked.
changing the unitlength does not make any difference.

\begin{figure}
\begin{picture}(15,19)(0,0)
\scalebox{2}{great big gnat}
regular gnat
\scalebox{0.5}{tiny gnat}

\end{picture}
\end{figure}

All the texts are looking eqall in size. Increasing the number in "\scalebox{2}" from 2 to 5, for instance, increases the distance to the next text (regular gnat) but i wanted to make the text bigger and not only the unvisible box.

Actually, I am generally having problems with this graphics package. Just to point it out, I am using Leslie Lamport's "User`s guide and reference manual".

looking for any help desperately....

thanks

Red face I won`t try to creat any pic with latex again

having spend a few days reading "the latex companion" and Leslie Lamport`s "LATEX Users Guide and Reference Manual" I have come to the conclusion that graphic creation with LATEX is a big pain.

Only practicable solution seems to be generation of graphical materials in another software package and then inserting them in latex.

I have spend quite a lot of time on that thing
But at least I learnt something that latex was thought to be type setting programs when there was not need for graphics back in the 70s.
