are you asking how to change at boot time or while logged into X already ?

you can edit your /etc/inittab file to read level 3 instead of 5 or

you can do a ctrl-alt-F1 thru F6 to get a command line..

at boot time?

then you want to edit your /etc/inittab file to read:

id:3:initdefault:

instead of:

id:5:initdefault:
