Exclamation gnome won't start, but gdm does

I was emerging mozilla on my gentoo linux box, but when I came home it seemed to have crashed. I tried to kill the xserver with alt ctrl backspace, but it didn't work, neither did the reboot command (ctrl alt del). So I resetted my computer.
But now I can't load gnome2, gdm starts, but when I log in I tries to load gnome and then gives me gdm again.
loading gnome2 from terminal doesn't work either...the xserver does work (gdm works, so x must work too).

[edit]
these are the errors it gives me when i trie to load gnome:
Code:
#gnome-wm
**(process:3337):WARNING**:CORBA_ORB_destroy: ORB still has 2 refs
**(process:3337):WARNING**:ORB:a total of 6 refs to 5 ORB objects were loaded
Window Manager error:Unable to open X display
**(metacity:3336):WARNING**:CORBA_ORB_destroy: ORB still has 2 refs
**(metacity:3336):WARNING**:ORB:a total of 7 refs to 6 ORB objects were loaded

Using startx you can load gnome2, is it correct? See if your have in /etc/X11/gdm/ gnomerc file it should be one-liner
exec /usr/bin/gnome-session or similar, I don't have gnome 2 loaded so you might check the path to gnome2 first.

I tried those things meanwhile, I think the error I got when I ran /usr/bin/gnome-sesions are the most usefull
Code:
#/usr/bin/gnome-session
(gnome-login-check:3321):Gtk-WARNING**:Cannot open display:
Failed to run gconf-sanity-check-2:failed to execute child process "gconf-sanity-check-2" (no such file or directory)
(gnome-session:3320):Gtk-WARNING**:Cannot open display:
# ls /etc/X11/gdm/sessions
Gnome Xsession
#
I guess I'll go looking for gconf-sanity-check...
