Question gnome terminal 'role'

while reading the man page for gnome-terminal I came across the role switch.
But i'm having trouble understanding what it means.

Does anyone have an example they could explain to me?

Quote:
--role=ROLE
Set the role for the last-specified window; applies to only one window; can be specified once for each window you create from the command line.
This isn't very helpful. Is 'role' some variable that i would define in a script or something?
