gnome startup sequence
I've been running linux for years now and I still don't know all the fundementals so you are going to have to bear with me...I'm running Fedora 3 Nvidia FX 20gig maxtor 1.2ghz cpu 512 ddr266 memory mag screen and generic ethernet.
I've got this error on numerous installs, multiple boots and have always found the work around. When Gnome startsup I get a unknown internet address, unable to determine if gnome will function correctly, invalid host error at login. I've always been able to find my ip edit hosts and continue boot. For some odd reason (this is my first time experiencing this problem under fedora core 3) after running a live cd (knoppix, mepis, slax, etc) the host name on my harddrive changes (I have two ext3 primary partitions, boot and root). Before I could just change the ip now I have a new host name, and I'm not sure how to go about eliminating this load message. I've edited hosts to include new name and ip but still no function. Is there a way to call to the operating system and change the host and ip with out the hosts file or change the logging scrpit so gnome will boot properly. I still have a connection, I'm just worried about functionality of gnome under fedora core 3 without the proper mechanisms. I'm not sure how to go about registering my hostname and ip so the change coencides with the OS. The Live distributions seems to enter my hard disk and change my host name I'm not sure how these live distros are doing this...might be some switch on my roadrunner, and manually editting hosts isn't working any more on fedora, and I don't want any other arising errors, so how should I go about getting my hostname and ip to function properly with gnome. Is there a command I'm missing, a script somewhere, or am I stuck with the residual hostname boot error from live cds that might conflict with operation?
Any help would be apprieciated.
