gnome panel crashes on mandrake

I just did a new install of mandrake 8.2 this afternoon, so I haven't done any system modifications, and this has happened since the very first time I ran gnome 1.4

It starts up and immeaditly the panel crashes, I can open a terminal and run panel again, but can anyone tell me a fix to keep it from crashing in the first place

This has been happening in a lab full of older dells
about two thirds...of them. I figured it's a hardware issue.
KDE does fine.

We are however running RH 7.2. Perhaps it's not hW could be Gnome
