gnome in Slackware is bugging
 

I love Slackware 8.0 its not as bloated as mandrake but I am having some trouble. I installed X windows with gnome as the default window manager. And right after installation gtk is complaining about many things! Something like:

gtk-error can't find string "blah blah"

Gnome runs but in the background it errors like crazy and can't find fonts and it doesn't keep my settings.

I don't have a whole lot of room on my linux partition, so I install only what I think gnome needs. I installed all the default checked items for xfree and gnome so I think it has everything. Anyone have this problem before? I have an IBM thinkpad pentium 266MMX.

Well... looking very strange.

I suppose the best way (but maybe not a way you will like) is too reinstall gnome from newly downloaded source with newer version on gnome library (like gtk). Gnome is working very well for me. You prolly not installed something gnome need I suppose.

kernel weirdness
 

I installed kernel 2.4.5 on my system. I checked the slackware site and they said slackware 8.1 will probably have kernel 2.4.18. I thought the higher the number, the more advanced the kernel was. Set me strait I'm confused. And do you think changeing the kernel to,what was it...2.12.2, or whatever other kernel was bundled in the package, will help gnome at all?

Even though you may not want to, you may end up needing to install some extra gtk+/gnome files. What specifically are the errors you are getting? Any repetetive errors between them? By the way, I lived in Yakima for 2 1/2 years. I so miss it actually! ;)

Yes the higher the number, the more advanced the kernel is.

2.12.2? I think you mean 2.2.12

oh pusha! I was thinking 2.4.18 as in decimal not version number. I was thinking 18 as .18 as in closer to .2 not 18. ok I'm silly.
I'm going to reinstall slackware and take a closer look at those errors.

I'm getting a plethra of errors. I installed all of gnome and xfree this time. As usaul gnome runs but in the background it says this to name a few:

Could not init font path element (path), removing from list
Xlib: Connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: /dev/dsp no such device
Client is not authorized to connect to server
Eel-WARNING **: '-free font (blah blah) is not a valid XLFD string
Gtk-WARNING **:gtk_signal_disconnect_by_data(): could not find handler containing data (0x8113890) (I got several of these)

/dev/dsp: no such device (at least 8 of these)

Any ideas? I was logged in as root. Is it possible that I ran the configuration script xf86config with the wrong options? I tried several different configurations. Trying very low resource options like 640x480 256 colors for my screen. Thanks for any help!

I think I'm having the same problem. I'm really new to Linux, but those errors look familiar. I'm using Gnome and get all sorts of Gtk-ERROR, Gtk-CRITICAL, and Gtk-WARNING message in the background. Everything seems to be working fine from within x though, with the exception of my sound. Can the two issues be related maybe?

Welcome to the world of free software, Raskall ;). Don't worry about the messages you see until something actually breaks. These messages are simply status and debugging reports. I'm used to seeing a flood of them when I mess with Gnome, even though they haven't gotten in the way of anything.

Unless, of course, they're not supposed to be there. I'll feel very silly if that's the case!

hehe I'm used to errors. I'm unfortunately an MCSE. :)

Also just to mention, the kernel has nothing to do with Gnome and its errors. There is also really no reason to install a new kernel unless its some sort of security reason or you need support for a device.

As for your sound, Slack doesn't configure it during install. Browse the forums here, its asked and answered so much on how to get sound working in Slack.

actually 2.4.18 isn't the latest kernel.. 2.4.20 is the latest stable kernel. though the latest "official" slackware contains 2.4.18 if thats what you meant.
