Gnome desktop: how to change icons

Hi, I've been using linux for few weeks, and I'm stuck while trying to change gnome theme. I've found a very good theme on the web, and I download the tar package, then extracted it to ~/.themes it works nicely, except for the icons. Later on I discover that something wrong with my gnome desktop that I couldn't change the icon themes. I've tried extracting the icon theme package to ~/.icons, but when I tried to switch it from gnome desktop manager, nothing happened, or sometimes all the icons turns into a paper logo, very boring. Is there any way I can change the icon theme without going to gnome desktop manager, because i think it's buggy. Thanks

Maybe you have a special case, but I've generally found the way to install Gnome themes is just to go to the theme manager and select "install new theme." Don't untar it. Just install exactly what you downloaded (.tar.gz).

After some experiment, I did it (yay!). What I did is I deleted everything inside ~/.themes and ~/.icons, and instead manually installing it by extracting tar.gz into /usr/share/themes and /usr/share/icons, and after reboot everything works. I still believe the gnome theme manager is buggy though.
