Well...I think it depends on your camera. A lot of cameras don't have send-to-pc buttons (or otherwise) directly on the camera but rely on the computer to do the requesting.
I suppose there's a way to monitor messages that come from usb and check for when the camera sends the "Send to PC" command, but I don't know how to do it.
I know that you can, however, watch system events by using the "tail" command. Eg:

That will display all the things that the system notices, being updated about every 3 seconds. (You have to use CTRL+C to get out of it)
Btw, you don't need to do that big long command every time you mount your camera: Use /etc/fstab.
Just follow the syntax of the items that're already in there to add a new line for your camera.
