gnome desk guide...

question: i'm using gnome on RH7.1 and was wondering how i can reduce the amount of virtual desktops in my desk guide applet. i was playing around one day and accidentally put 6 there, but i only want (and need) the default 4.

how does one get these removed? why is there nothing on the net that tells one how to do this?

thanks!

and another question about gnome:

how do i get to kde from gnome once again? logout doesn't give me a screen option and brings me back to the console. startkde give me a ton of errors (but then again, so does gnome-session; i guess only startx works at a console)

also, if i ever wanted to, how do i make kde the default when i run startx?

In the Workspaces section of the Window manager configuration is where you set the number of workspaces. Since you did not post your current window manager I assume it is sawfish.

run

gnomecc

and look in the section called sawfish window manager. It is also in the main menu under programs/settings/sawfish window manager/Workspaces

to switch window managers run

switchdesk

and select the one you want.

startx will bring back the last session saved on your system.

but...

but...but...what if you don't have switchdesk for some reason? ahh...simply type:
pico /home/username/.xinitrc
change "username" to your username though...
you might have nothing in it, or one word, or a lot of stuff...what we are looking for might be here:

# Start the window manager:
exec gnome-session

nonetheless, you want to change the window manager to:

startkde
and take out the "exec gnome-session"

that's for if you want to boot kde...if you want window manager it's:

wmaker

and so on and so on...you can toy around with it for awhile, switchdesk just does it automatically w/o the 'picoing'
