gnome-calculator - converting between numeric bases (eg hex to binary)
 

Hi,

I'm trying to work out how, using gnome-calculator in Gnome 2.10, to convert between different number bases - for example hex to binary.

What I need is to enter a number in a certain base (such as 3F hex) into the calculator and press a button which immediately displays the representation of that number in a different base (such as binary). This works in the Windows calculator, but doesn't work in gnome-calculator - nothing happens upon pressing 'bin' or 'dec' or 'hex'. I've read numerous posts saying that this is possible but none that actually say how to do it.

1) Make sure you are in Scientific mode (View > Scientific mode)

2) Select your desired base system by clicking the appropriate radio button below and to the right of the "screen"

3) Punch in the number you wish to convert

4) Click the base system you wish to convert this number to.

So to convert 3F in hex to decimal, I click the "Hex" radio button, key in "3F", then click the "Dec" radio button, and it displays the result "63".

Very odd - the way you describe is how I would expect it to work (as with Windows Calculator).

However, this gnome-calculator (Ubuntu 5.04, Gnome 2.10), doesn't change the contents of the display when I press one of the 'bin', 'oct', 'dec', 'hex' radio buttons after entering a number.

Possibly a distro or gnome version specific problem? Feedback or ideas very much appreciated.
