Glib error

Ok my goal: installing gtk2.2
My problem: installing pango 1.2
The gap: GLIB!!!!

Ok, now to the details. I just installed pkgconfig, flawlessy, woohoo my first proper mnaual install from source. SWEETNESS. Then I goto install glib 2.2.2, flawless? Looks like it, 2/2 wow I'm on fire. Something has to be wrong. WAIT. I goto install pango 1.2 ./configuring alright....so far... get's to the end and WHAM glib is not installed or is installed incorrectly?. Hmmm, what did I do wrong?

My glib install procedure EXACTLY...

./configure - no problems
make - no problems
make check - all tests pass
make install - flawless
make clean - Installed and cleaned up, woohoo!!

So where lies the problem? What do you guys need to know to figure this out? Do I need to link files or something to point to my new glib install? Didn't say that in the INSTALL or README files. Hmm. HELP PLEASE!!!

Btw this was all done as root.

have you tried: "export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/glib "?

Am I supposed to type that in an xterm? Or put that inside some config file?

Ok I did that and also tried ldconfig

now I get this..

ecking for pkg-config... (cached) /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking for GLIB - version >= 2.1.3...
*** 'pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0' returned 2.2.2, but GLIB (2.2.1)
*** was found! If pkg-config was correct, then it is best
*** to remove the old version of GLib. You may also be able to fix the error
*** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing
*** /etc/ld.so.conf. Make sure you have run ldconfig if that is
*** required on your system.
*** If pkg-config was wrong, set the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH
*** to point to the correct configuration files
no
configure: error:
*** Glib 2.1.3 or better is required. The latest version of
*** Glib is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/.

It says edit the path but I don't know how. I tried googling to no avail. It also says or edit /etc/ld.so.conf but there are only 2 lines in there and none relating or containg anything it wants me to edit. Should I just add them? If so then what do I add EXACTLY? I'm a bit confused and I'm a noob.

After extensive searching I just FINALLY came up with some help and pointed me to check for pango devel package in my install software panel. I found it installed it and got pango to work... now my final dependancy, atk 1.2 .. i download it, read the INSTALL and READ me files. Everything looks the same, ./configure, make, make check, install. I get through ./configure with no errors, same for make, make check doesn't seam to check for errors or report if all test passed OR not. Strange. So I do make install. Seams short and incomplete but doesn't SEAM to give any errors. I try and install gtk 2.2 and says atk 1.2 is still not installed. O M * G. What do I have to do now? What am I missing?

This is turning into one painful and long learning experience.

Try:

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=$PKG_CONFIG_PATH:/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig

then rerun configure.
