getting involved
Hi All, I am a software developer with loads of experience in “old money” development – Vax VMS (some unix) – Fortran, Pascal (bit of C & C++). I have been using linux at home for about 5 years now but not for development.
I desperately want to ramp up my skill set particularly with a bias to developing under linux. I had a look at the libre office development site and it looked a bit daunting. Can anyone suggest any other open source projects which would be worth looking at as an introduction? I am trying to find a project which is not as complex as office but has a sympathetic dev team who could carry a newbie for a while. My plan is to build libre office and then have a look at some of the C++ related tasks. If nothing else this gets me used to the tools involved. Cheers |
Your asking for the world.
Developers are not capable of sympathy. There is no such thing. They do not have emotions.Emotions are not logical. How about a Source file from gedit or something else simple? I think there is a Kate , Kedit and Kwrite for KDE as well.http://www.google.com/search?q=Linux...c7b1769f792670
Java is not working. Imagine a smiley emotioncon here. |
Maybe look at GNU PDF? It's quite a young project and they're looking for developers. I don't know what their team is like, but it might be worth a try. I'm interested in getting involved with that project myself, but I've just not had the time.

thanks Nylex. I had a look at that project this morning and I will at least try and set up a build environment on my PC. Who knows after that.
Anyway, back to the scary world of VMS Pascal where the things have gone pear shpaed today :( |
You may want to take a look at SourceForge.net or freshmeat.net to find other projects. Other than that, I can't really offer any advice, I'm afraid. Hopefully others will contribute to this thread..
